Home - A Sanctuary From the World

“The time will come when only those who believe deeply and actively in the family will be able to preserve their families in the midst of the gathering evil around us.” “Spencer W. Kimball (Ensign, Nov. 1980, p. 4.)

Women’s Vital Role in the Family/ First and Highest Priority

“The home is under siege. So many families are being destroyed…If anyone can change the dismal situation into which we are sliding, it is you. Rise up, O women of Zion, rise to the great challenge which faces you…My challenge to you…is that you will rededicate yourselves to the strengthening of your homes.”  President Gordon B. Hinckley-(Ensign Nov 1998, 99-100)

The mother in the family far more than the father, she is the one who instills in the hearts of the children, a testimony and love for the gospel…and whenever you find a woman who is devoted to this work, almost without exception you will find that her children are devoted to it. Pres. Heber J. Grant (Gospel Standards, 101)

Mothers are the emotional glue that holds the family together. Joseph F. Smith said. “There are people fond of saying that women are the weaker vessels. I don’t believe it. Physically, they may be; but spiritually, morally…and in faith, what man can match a woman who is really convinced?”

Sister Eliza R. Snow “Let your first business be to perform your duties at home.”

President Gordon B Hinckley “You are the guardians of the hearth. You are the bearers of the children. You are they who nurture them and establish within them the habits of their lives. No other work reaches so close to divinity as does the nurturing of the sons and daughters of God.

Zina D H Young: If there is one mother present here who does not teach and instruct her children properly… I plead with you to do so. Call your children around you … and pray with them. … Warn the children of the evils that surround us … that they may not become a prey to these evils, but grow up in holiness and in purity before the Lord.”

Fortify Children Spiritually

A few years ago, Bishop Stanley Smoot was interviewed by President Spencer W. Kimball. President Kimball asked, “How often do you have family prayer?” Bishop Smoot answered, “We try to have family prayer twice a day, but we average about once.” President Kimball answered, “In the past, having family prayer once a day may have been all right. But in the future it will not be enough if we are going to save our families.”I wonder if having casual and infrequent family home evening will be enough in the future to fortify our children with sufficient moral strength. In the future, infrequent family scripture study may be inadequate to arm our children with the virtue necessary to withstand the moral decay of the environment in which they will live. Where in the world will the children learn chastity, integrity, honesty, and basic human decency if not at home? These values will, of course, be reinforced at church, but parental teaching is more constant Elder James E. Faust (Oct 1990)

 Charity Begins with Mother:

“If I could have one thing happen for parents of this church…., it would be that they feel the love of the Lord in their lives each day as they care for Heavenly Father’s children. … I invite you, in all of your dealings, to put on the mantle of charity, to envelop your family in the pure love of Christ.” Bonnie D. Parkin

Zina D H Young: Let us be careful to speak with wisdom before our little ones, avoiding fault-finding… and cultivate the higher attributes of our nature, that will tend to elevate, refine and purify the heart. …Mothers should never speak a word detrimental to the father’s best interest before the children, for they are close observers. Sow good seeds in their young and tender minds…and thus you will lay up treasures in heaven

Frequent Temple Attendance Help Homes become Holy

In the latter days there will be a people so pure in Mount Zion, with a house established upon the tops of the mountains, that God will manifest himself, not only in their temple….but when they retire to their homes, behold each [home] will be lighted up by the glory of God, a pillar of flaming fire by night.-Orson Pratt

Let these truths sink down in our hearts, that we may, even here, begin to enjoy that which shall be in full hereafter.- Joseph Smith

We help make our homes holy by bringing the spirit of the temple home with us. When we keep our temple covenants, we become a sanctifying influence to all who come within the walls of our homes. Holy homes are a process. Patience and prayer are part of the process.

Followers of Christ are invited to “gather” and “stand in holy places”. These holy places include temples, homes and chapels. The presence of the Sprit and the behavior of those within these physical structures are what make them “holy places.” HB 1.4.1

Parents Need to Be Leaders: Family Counsel

Plan the good, or it will not happen. Happy, well balanced families are not an accident. They come from parents who talk together, and with vision plan and carry out the good they want to have happen in the lives of their children. (If you fail to plan, then plan to fail) Parents plan spiritual experiences, wholesome recreational activities, work projects, service project, create traditions that unite the family. They use family counsels to help their children feel a part of the planning. This helps children especially teens, feel that they belong, they are needed and their opinions are valued. (what every teen longs to feel).

Priesthood Power in the Home:

President Boyd K. Packer: Now, fathers, I would remind you of the sacred nature of your calling. You have the power of the priesthood directly from the Lord to protect your home. There will be times when all that stands as a shield between your family and the adversary’s mischief will be that power.
